From the ChibiPaint Site:
Requirements
* Java 1.4 or newer
* Tested on Windows and Mac (should work on other platforms with Java 1.4 support)
* JTablet 0.9.5 is highly recommend to be able to use the tablet pressure (unfortunately it's currently available on windows only)
Stuff you should know
* When using JTablet, you can activate the pressure for the size and/or opacity of a tool by clicking the little circles on the left of the corresponding slider.
* Dragging with the right mouse button on a slider allows finer control
* Right click on the picture for the color picker
* Drag with the middle mouse button to scroll the image (also works if you press space and drag with the left button)
* Mousewheel is supported and allows you to zoom on the point under the mouse cursor
Keyboard shortcuts
* Ctrl-Z: Undo
* Shift-Ctrl-Z: Redo
* [ ]: Brush Size
* -, or ctrl-- Zoom Out
* +, or ctrl-+ Zoom In
* Ctrl-0 Zoom 100%
* 1 à 0, brush opacity
* SPACE and drag with the left mouse button: image scrolling
Remember, this software is a work in progress, so don't forget to use the Print Screen key often to make screenshots of your work in case something bad happens.

Chibi Problems
There is a known problem with versions of ChibiPaint prior to the one we're using, where the Java Virtual Machine is not closing properly when you finish your drawing. It remains in memory, using up computer resources. Every time you open the program, it opens a new Java Virtual Machine, using up more memory, making the program sluggish, or appearing to freeze.
This has been fixed in the version we're running, but some of the other sites are not running the latest version. So, if you are drawing with ChibiPaint elsewhere, check which version they're running by clicking on About in the Help Menu. If the version is less than 0.7.11.2, it is one of the problem ones.
Once you've opened one of these older versions, the only way to fix the problem is to shutdown/restart your computer.
There is another known problem for users that don't have drawing tablets. Every movement requires the program to access the driver for the device that controls the movement. By default, the program looks for the tablet driver first. If it finds one, all's well. If not, it waits for a timeout period, then looks for the mouse driver.
So, if you don't have a drawing tablet, the program can appear to freeze or be sluggish. Usually, stopping any mouse movement for a short time (30-60 seconds), will let the program "catch up".

Just read about another problem with ChibiPaint - it won't work on a Mac, because the version of Java available for OS X is too old.

question, why do we not have the layer save ability that is available on the other sites?
Offline
Oh yes it does work on a Mac - it's what I use, no problems so far . . .

That's great to hear Xina54. I had read on their Forum that it wouldn't, and I don't have a Mac to try it out on.

Terry, I asked this in the comment thread on my studio 3 draw but I don't think you saw it:
Which site has a version of Chibi that saves the layers? I checked the Hungarian one where you drew the Namibian girl and they are running the same version as we have, I think. Did your layers stay separated between retouches there?

Gosh, you guys are doing a lot of work for this. Thank you.

Yes they saved in layers there. I would make as many as 5 saves or more just to make sure I would have any send problems or lagging problems. By doing several saves I would not get any lagging problems or uploading issues, but if I am understanding the java issue, then every save my java stayed open, so, not only did I have lets say 5 pictures done in the applet with java, but also each save must have constituted a java run time error, so that meant I may have had as many as possibly 15+ virtual machines open which ate my virtual memory, and even though I cleared out the cache it wasn't releasing it from the vitual memory, at least that is my unschooled understanding of it. So in IE7 all my virtual memory was gone for java. I really thought by dumping java and 7 and reinstalling would have given me a fresh memory, but I guess my computer keeps the settings in its memory, thus it is as if I never uninstalled and reinstalled.,? The only thing I can think of that might fix the problem in a sense would be to do a system restore, I was advised that that was a drastic measure to use, but, I have in the past done that when there was an unchecked virus that had my computer. I did a virus clean, but, still did a system restore. I would have to go back to when I first joined the oekaki na smoczyn and reboot from there. I am guessing that would be my only hope. I would have to keep doing that though, and I am not sure how many times I could do that, or if it wise to do that.
any Ideas Noel?

@STARZSHINE
Once you shut down/reboot your computer, whatever is in memory is cleared, even Java Virtual Machine memory. You shouldn't have to do a system restore.
Are you still having problems?
What version of windows are you using (XP, Vista, etc)?
Are you still using IE7?
What version of Java do you have installed (from your Control Panel/Add Remove Programs)? It will look something like "Java(TM) 6 Update 5".
If you have a lot of older Java versions, you could remove them, as you don't really need them.

I have windows xp home version, I had the newest java and the newest IE7. I uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted, and still the java wouldn't work, after the reinstall it didn't say runtime errors, it said fatal plugin errors and that was even in firefox. I did everything I could think of, and it wouldn't work again in 7. I uninstall 7 works fine in 6. But 6 seems much slower, and I liked the way 7 could open in tabs like firefox. I did everything and I just couldn't get java to work again in 7. Before I rebooted I got the message lauch failed, several virtual machines open, or something to that effect. I first cleared out my java memory and then I ran ccleaner and cleared all temp files, then I rebooted, I got the same message. I then cleaned out all the older versions of java, still nothing, so I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it, rebooted, and still got a runtime message. So I uninstalled 7 java worked in 6, I reinstalled 7, rebooted, and got the fatal plug in error. So I just went back to 6. Don't know why it wont work in 7, and firefox won't run java either when 7 is installed. go figure?!

Huh, just letting you know I re-installed IE7 today to see what would happen with my java, and guess what, everything works again. Go figure. I am sitting here with my jaw on the floor
Can you believe it? Did everything the same as I did before but now it works. Yeah! for me. I am stumped for sure now, who knows, life and it's quirks, let's hope this means that my dark cloud has finally passed! A girl can hope can't she? ![]()

Whew!
eyes, fingers, ankles, and elbows all crossed for you. Let's hope this is the last of the mysterious malfunctions. I read that post you wrote about the 'inne' board and them saying you couldn't draw from photo refs. Huh? I'm sorry, but...huh?
I'm going to go over there right now and poke those silly people with my stylus.

I recently want back to Rate My Drawings because someone told me they had a new tool over there. Of course I had to go look to see what it was. It is actually the chibi applet, there they have it so where if you save your drawing for later to your computer when you reload it it actually saves layers. They are using the same version that we have here but they have a RMD Update called 0.08 I don't know what that is. I am not literate as far as programs go. But since it is the same version we have here and we don't have that option maybe Noel could look into it for us so we would have that option here. That way we could save the layers and our unfinished drawing to our computer as they can over to RMD and then finish and load it to the Ginkgo site. Just something to think about.

I actually have worked on a new script to do the same, but I have not yet had time to install it. Hopefully, things will settle down here and I'll be able to update the studios.

Noel, Oh thank you! That sounds wonderful. With my time of drawing being so split up (more so than normal) it is really important for me that I can save things like that and come back to them.
Thanks again

OMG I certainly hope so! I so miss the layers, not having them has been so discouraging. I have so many things that go on at home sometimes and my work gets interrupted and I leave the computer running with a picture open because I hate to lose the layers. The picture never turns out the same when the layers merge and you have to start new ones.

I finally got around to installing the update that will save the Chibi Paint layers. All you have to do is answer "Yes" to the popup asking if you'd like to save the layers, when you are saving your drawing.
